Various Yarn Weights - US Yarns

by Valerie Nugent
(Chico, Ca. USA)

I doubled a medium worsted acrylic 4 ply to make a square. I used US 10 needles and cast on 24 stitches to make an 8 inch square. I used one pink and one purple so it would be a heavy square. This was a regular inexpensive yarn that could be bought at Wal-Mart and was the Red Heart Super Saver brand.

Using the same size needles, I also used two threads of Caron, simply soft, 100% acrylic, 4 ply yarn. This is used for baby blankets and is extra soft and smaller in diameter than the above yarn. I needed 28 stitches to make an 8 inch square.

Again, using the US 10 or 6mm knitting needles, I tried the Lion Brand Chenille thick & quick yarn. I had to try to knit as tightly as possible to make sure there were no gaps. This one required 22 stitches to make 8 inches across.

I am using up yarn in my yarn basket before I try to find some wool yarn on sale. I am taking this to the women in my church to see who may be interested in sending square on a regular basis.

Keep up the good work!
