Single crochet in alternating loops (8 inch block)

In looking for a closely crocheted block to make scarves for our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan I found this pattern which also works well for squares. It is from www.crochetme.com
Uses an H hook and about one ounce of worsted 4 ply wool.
Chain any even number of stitches to get desired size. I used 30 stitches.
Row 1: One single crochet in each chain. At end of row, chain 1 and turn.
Row 2: *one single crochet in front loop only, one single crochet in back loop only.* Repeat until end of row.
Repeat row 2 until desired size is reached.
****Helpful hint****
To help get the exact size I cut out an 8 inch template from gridded plastic to use as my measuring template. As I begin the square I check several times in the initial rows to be sure I am attaining the correct size. The initial chain is usually longer than 8 inches but gets smaller as the subsequent rows are added.
