"no measure/bind off" square

by Jane Holmes
(Devon, England)

using double knitting wool and 4mm needles, cast on 81 sts.
row 1 and every other row, knit.
row 2, knit 39, knit 3 together, knit to end.
row 4, knit 38, knit 3 together, knit to end.
row 6, knit 37. knit 3 together, knit to end.
row 8, knit 36, knit 3 together. knit to end.
continue decreasing in this manner until 3 sts remain. knit 3 together, cut yarn leaving a metre for sewing up and pull through the last stitch.
hey presto! 8 x 8 square!!
(If you find it easier, instead of knitting 3 together, try slip 1, knit 2 tog, pass slip stitch over.)

"no measure"

Squares aren't exactly "no measure" - first you must ensure that you are getting the correct gauge to make an 8-inch square. Not everyone will automatically produce an 8-inch square using the specified needle size.
