Need Help on weights of Yarn

by Valerie N
(Chico, Ca, USA)

Does anyone know where to get 8 ply yarn?? Can you give me a name brand and country of origin to start looking for the 8 ply yarn?

I bought Patons 100% wool, medium weight, 100g. It does not say what ply it is. It looks the same diameter as the 4 ply acrylic that I made a square with.(I used 2 strands on the acrylic) Does that mean I need to use two strands of yarn since it is medium weight? I thought we needed heavy squares for these blankets.

Does anyone know about Panda Woolbale, from Australia, 100% wool,it is called a sport weight. Has anyone used this yarn? Is sport weight lighter or heavier than knitting worsted? Do you double it to get the right thickness?

Has anyone heard about Nashua Wooly Stripes, from Italy, 100% wool and the weight is Knitting Worsted? Do you need to use double strands on this as well?

I have made 6 different acrylic squares from different thicknesses. Now that I purchased my first 100% wool yarn, and see how thin the yarn is, I am concerned that my acrylic ones that I used two strands on are too thick. I don't know if I should send them or not.

If anyone can shed any light on this, I greatly appreciate it. I am very confused and afraid to make any more squares. I really want to get my church group and friends to help me make squares but I don't know to tell them on the weights and plys. Any input is greatly appreciates.
