Easy checkerboard stitch for squares

Cast on a multiple of 4 stitches plus 1 extra stitch
(such as 32 stitches plus 1 or multiple of 4 stitches
plus 1 stitch needed for size needle to make 8" square.)

Row 1 - knit
Row 2 - Purl
Row 3 - (Knit 1, Purl 3) to last stitch, Knit 1
Row 4 - Purl

Repeat Rows 1-4
