The afghan stitch is also good if you want to cross stitch pictures on it because the rows and stitches are actually more square-like than any other stitch (at least that I've seen).
Also if you want another really dense but cool texture for a square, crocheting around the post has produced a kinda stretch riblike pattern. I'm using a 4mm hook and worsted weight yarn.
