"Wrong knitting needle size
There is an incorrect needle size on the first instalment of the 'How to Knit' e classes. It says size 4 (USA) 10 (Canada, UK), it should or course say 10 (USA) 4 (Canada, UK), this has been amended."
This equates to 6mm needles in modern UK, that is size number 4 in Old UK needle sizes (which are the same as Canada), but Old UK (and Canadian) size number 4 is not 4mm, it is 6mm.
The newsletter also says "In the meantime, Zanny says as long as it is an 8 inch square, we will have so many squares it will be easy to match yarn weights to make blankets, so just knit and crochet whatever you've got. Wise woman!"
Someone else has already kindly posted perfectly good instructions for producing an 8 inch square on 4mm needles, using British Double Knitting yarn (Thanks Liz in Kent).
Since either is helpful to the struggling children in South Africa, I assume it is fine if UK knitters just use whichever instructions work best for them and their yarn, at least until further notice.

Correction re needle size. by: Caroline S.
I think there was a comment posted somewhere on the site recently stating that an error had been made with regard to the needle size recommended. They meant to state 4mm (US size 6, old UK & Canadian size 8) with 8 ply (double knitting) wool.
